The Connection Between Stress and Grinding Your Teeth

Posted on 1/15/2018 by Moyer Office
Tooth Grinding David R. Moyer Cosmetic & Family Dentistry AZ 85028Tooth grinding, or bruxism as it is known to us, is a common problem that a lot of people face without even realizing it. A lot of people tend to do it in their sleep and therefore never even realize that it is a problem to begin with.

The symptoms of it usually come out in the form of facial pain and headaches, which many patients may believe has another cause. In many cases, a lot of patients will also find that it is due to stress.

Tooth Grinding and Stress: What Is the Connection?

In many cases, grinding your teeth is a reaction to stress or anxiety. Often, patients can see the connection when they experience headaches and facial pain. Sometimes, these symptoms occur during rather busy or stressful times in their lives.

Teeth grinding can occur unconsciously in certain situations, or it can happen during sleep when the patient is unaware of it. In addition, stress and general anxiety can also cause sleep disorders and this is where a lot of teeth grinding will come into play. If you feel that this may be a factor, it could be a good idea to keep a track of your sleep patterns.

Lifestyle can also play a role in grinding. Smoking, drinking alcohol and using certain recreational drugs can increase the chances. Of course, smoking, alcohol and certain drugs are often used by people who experience high levels of stress in their lives and therefore need some kind of mental or even physical release.

If you are worried that you might have bruxism then make sure to come and speak to us. You can make an appointment and we will take the time to examine your teeth and see what can be done.
