Toothbrush David R. Moyer Cosmetic & Family Dentistry AZ 85028It's always a good idea to replace or disinfect your toothbrush when you get over a cold. Even though you won't be able to catch the same virus that you had before, you can still get sick from a different strain that's left on your toothbrush.

You don't want to disinfect your toothbrush too much, because this will cause your toothbrush to dry out and it will not clean your teeth like it used to.

There are many different types of bacteria that can grow on your toothbrush, even the ones that contain the flu, stomach virus, and strep just to list a few and there are other types of virus's that you can get besides them. In this article we are going to list some of the types of virus's that you will need to change your toothbrush.

Virus's That Will Require a Toothbrush Change

•  The flu- If you have the flu it might be a good idea to disinfect it after each use, and do not store it beside other toothbrushes that's in the house, you would want to store it in an open dry area after you disinfect it by letting it soak in antibacterial mouthwash for 10-15 minutes. After you let it soak be sure to rinse it out thoroughly with warm water, before you use it again. After you are well and don't have the flu it wouldn't be a bad idea to go ahead and replace your toothbrush, it's not recommended but it wouldn't hurt.
•  Strep throat- You don't need to toss your toothbrush out if you have strep, just disinfect it after every 2-4 uses, and keep it stored in an open area.
•  The stomach bug- The stomach bug normally only lasts for 24-48 hours, you do not need to toss your toothbrush just make sure you disinfect it after each use.

It's always best to keep extra toothbrushes on hand due to illnesses and the flu season. We recommend you change out your toothbrush once every 2-3 months, to keep your teeth and mouth free from bacteria. If you have any questions or concerns, please give us a call!
