Dental Chips Need Attention So as Not to Leave You with a Broken Tooth

Dental Chips Need Attention So as Not to Leave You with a Broken ToothChipping your tooth is a fairly common occurrence. A chip can happen when you chew on something hard or if you suffer a blow to the face. A chip can be embarrassing to some, while others would rather ignore the problem rather than to treat it. If you experience a dental chip, your tooth needs attention. Otherwise, you could end up with a broken tooth.

Treat Small Chips with Dental Bonding

If you have a small chip on your teeth – especially one of the front teeth – dental bonding can do the trick. This quick treatment involves applying a putty material to the affected tooth. The putty is shaped and polished around the tooth so that it looks like new. The putty is then set with a UV light, which strengthens and hardens the material. The procedure is painless, and a great way to achieve uniform color across the teeth.

Dental Crowns

A more severe chip may require a crown for treatment. Crowns can protect the tooth from further damage, and they can also help with pain and sensitivity. A crown is a cap that is placed over the tooth, protecting it from chewing pressure. Your tooth will be trimmed down to provide room for the crown. This is a good option for most people who suffer from chipped teeth.

Dental Veneers

In some cases, people with chipped teeth elect to have veneers in over to make a major impact on the appearance of their smile. These thin porcelain shells can fix imperfections like chips, discoloration, and crooked teeth. They last for decades, so they are a permanent solution to a chipped tooth.

If you chip a tooth, don't wait until the problem worsens before you call our office. Contact us right away so that we can treat the problem immediately. You may just avoid a broken tooth.
