Can Food Affect Gum Recession?

Posted on 9/30/2019 by Moyer Office
Can Food Affect Gum Recession?Gum recession is caused by a variety of factors, including infections, gum disease, poor brushing, and tooth grinding. However, the foods that you eat can also irritate the gums, leading to further recession. By limiting or avoiding these foods completely, you can protect the health of your gums and your smile.

Acidic Foods

Did you know that oral bacteria thrive in an acidic environment? When bacteria levels get out of control, they can contribute to inflammation, gum disease, and recession. This includes foods like tomatoes, citrus fruits, alcohol, coffee, and others. In addition to gums that pull away from the teeth, acidic foods can also destroy the enamel, leading to further oral concerns.

Sugary Foods

Foods that are high in sugar can also contribute to gum recession. Sugary foods provide a buffet of nutrients to oral bacteria, which increases the risk of gum disease and cavities. Sugary foods to avoid include donuts, cakes, candy, soda, and energy drinks. Even foods like white bread can be damaging to the health and appearance of the gums.

Cold Food Items

One surprisingly bad food for your teeth and gums is ice cream, and it's not just because of the high sugar content. In fact, the cold temperature of ice cream can cause gum irritation, worsening areas that have already started to wear away. The teeth can then be exposed to sensitivity to cold and hot sensations.

Are you suffering from gum recession but don't know the exact cause? Gum disease is often the reason for this problem, and eating the wrong foods can make the problem worse. By better understanding how your diet might affect your oral health today and in the future, you can make a good decision about what you can – and cannot - eat.
