Single Tooth Implants

Single Tooth Implant illustration at David R. Moyer Cosmetic & Family DentistryTooth loss is extremely common, with the average person losing 12 of their permanent teeth by the time they are fifty. However, just because it is common does not mean that you should have to endure it. If you are missing one or more teeth, then you may be a good candidate for a single tooth dental implant. Single tooth implants are a fantastic option for many of our patients, giving them a stronger, more beautiful smile. We here at David R. Moyer Cosmetic & Family Dentistry recommend single tooth dental implants to patients who are looking to restore their smile without resorting to partials or bridges.

What are Single Tooth Implants?

While some people may find that a dental bridge or a denture partial is adequate, settling for simply “okay” will not give you the same exceptional results that you can find with dental implants. Unlike partials or bridges, which are not surgically placed in your mouth and are therefore not permanent, dental implants are an incredible and long-lasting option for many individuals. Not only does an implant close unsightly gaps in your smile, but it can also help prevent shifting teeth trying to migrate into the space.

Are Dental Implants Really Worth it?

"Most studies show
that dental implant success rates are
between 96 - 99%."
Over the past decade or so, the success rates of dental implants have reached an impressive pinnacle. Depending on what study you are looking at, dental implant success rates in the United States is somewhere between 96 - 99%. Such incredible success rates are thanks to the knowledge base around the procedure growing by leaps and bounds. The materials that we use in dental implant placement procedures have come quite a way as well.

Implants can also improve your bite, helping improve your quality of life, as your favorite foods will no longer be off the table! They can help prevent bone loss at the site of the missing tooth, as well. On the other hand, partials do not help prevent bone loss and do not provide the same bite force of an implant. They can also be removed, leading to potential embarrassment. They are also more fragile and will need replacing after seven to ten years or less. Bridges may also be helpful to some people but do require strong surrounding teeth to support it. Implants do not rely on your surrounding teeth, making them the better choice for many people who are not good candidates for bridges.

A dental implant is made up of three components:
1.  the post (the actual implant itself)
2.  the abutment
3.  the restoration (the crown)

Having an implant placed includes surgically placing a titanium post into your jawbone. This is performed with anesthesia to help prevent you from feeling any discomfort. Once your jaw and gums heal, we are then able to place the abutment, and upon it, your crown. The healing process can take up to six months, depending on your overall health and how well your gums and bone heal. These three components are what make your implant a success – and a success they are! If properly taken care of, they have a 99 percent success rate and can last you your entire life.

Are Dental Implants Right for You?

Getting a dental implant is a great option for many people. Sometimes our patients do require bone graft surgery before their implant procedure, but we can discuss this with you during your appointment to determine if you require it. Before scheduling your procedure, we also need to make sure you do not use tobacco products, as they can prevent and delay healing. Certain medications that you take, and preexisting conditions that you might have, may also be discussed during your appointment to ensure you are a good fit for this procedure.
