Promises Dentists Make to their Patients

Posted on 3/6/2023 by Moyer Office
Promises Dentists Make to their PatientsWhat can you expect from your next visit to the dentist? We have broken down the five promises dentists make in the ADA's Principles of Ethics and Code of Professional Conduct.

Give Consideration to a Patient's Preferences

One of your rights as a patient is to have input into your care and to be assured of discretion and privacy. Dentists are reminded in the code that they must put their patient's needs first, give them a voice in their care, and provide treatment that considers the patient's preferences within the bounds of accepted care.

Take Care to Cause No Harm

Your dentist must ensure your well-being. To do this, they must update their knowledge and skills and know when to refer patients to specialists.

The pace at which new scientific knowledge and technologies emerge is rapid. Dentists respond by logging countless hours each year in post-graduate study to give their patients the most cutting-edge, scientifically-sound treatment possible.

Take Action

This means you receive timely, effective care that considers your dentist's preferences and concerns. A dentist must act by their patients' individual needs and preferences.

Exert Objectivity

You can trust that you will receive compassionate care from your dentist, who does not practice bias. Everyone is treated with dignity and respect without regard to a person's race, religion, creed, socioeconomic status, ethnicity, or current health.

Be Honest

A doctor-patient relationship built on trust and open communication is the best kind. Honesty in diagnosis and treatment planning is crucial. After establishing that level of trust with your dentist, you can work together as partners to your mutual benefit.
