How Much of Your Tooth Gets Trimmed Off for Veneers?

Part of the process of getting dental veneers is trimming your teeth down so that the thin veneer fits seamlessly into your mouth. Many people worry about this much of the process, fearing it will be uncomfortable.

Most people who have it done, do not complain about there being much, if any, discomfort. That is because only a tiny sliver of your tooth is removed for the veneer to be placed.

Getting Dental Veneers is a Permanent Procedure

When preparing for dental veneers, your tooth is trimmed by a millimeter or two. This is done so that the tooth is set further back, and so the veneer sits directly on the tooth without sticking out. This also allows the veneer to attach to something more porous than the natural surface of your tooth.

However, by having this done, you are committing yourself to having veneers on those teeth the rest of your life. Veneers last between five and fifteen years when taken care of properly, but they will need to be replaced at that point.

Since a tiny sliver of tooth is removed, you may have sensitivity of your teeth for a short while after you get the veneers placed. This is often short-lived, and resolves itself in just a few weeks. Your dentist will want to make sure the teeth receiving the veneers are healthy so that you do not get a veneer put on a tooth that is going to need extraction in the near future.

If you want to find out more about the trimming process prior to getting dental veneers, ask your dentist. He or she can tell you how much of your specific tooth would need to be removed in preparation of veneers, and how the entire process should go.
