![]() Have you ever heard of oral allergy syndrome? If not, then you may want to read on. Oral allergy syndrome is also referred to as pollen-food allergy syndrome. It is when you have an oral allergy to foods that are often created through pollination.
This can include fruits, vegetables, and honey. A lot of people do not even realize they have a food allergy with these items. They simply know that something about these foods does not agree with them. What to Know About Oral Allergy SyndromeThere is something about pollination that creates an environment where some foods cause allergies to the tissues inside your mouth. What scientists believe is that your body is unable to differentiate between pollen and protein in specific foods. This can cause things like swollen taste buds or a swollen tongue, and often causes itching around the mouth. Patients can also experience hives, nausea or vomiting, dizziness, or in the most severe of cases, anaphylaxis. If you notice any of these problems, call 911 immediately. Most people who struggle with pollen allergies also have oral allergy syndrome, but they do not realize it is connected. All they know is that they tend to avoid those foods because they make them feel off.
