Is Diet Soda Harming Your Smile?

Posted on 6/7/2021 by Moyer Office
Is Diet Soda Harming Your Smile? The consumer can be easily overwhelmed when browsing the soda aisle at the grocery store. However, we want to help you to make good choices for your overall health and oral hygiene.

Dangers of Diet Soda

While diet sodas, and even sugar free beverages, have eliminated the sugar, we don't believe the problem behind these products has been eliminated. Many sugar free diet sodas and beverages contain multiple acids and have low pH values. The acids weaken tooth enamel and can cause tooth decay. The pH level in your mouth affects your teeth and gums. Exposure to sugar usually decreases the pH level from a neutral 7.0. Tooth decay can occur when the pH level in the mouth is at 5.5. By regulating the pH in your mouth, you can reduce bacteria and thereby reduce tooth decay.

In addition, diet sodas contain several harmful additives. Food dyes and corn syrup can discolor your teeth. In addition, your teeth can also appear dull as a result of drinking diet soda.

Beverage Alternatives

While making the change to other beverages may seem monumental, think about simply reducing the amount of soda, juices, and energy drinks you consume. Set a goal and stick to it.

Most of us are not as well hydrated as we think. Our top alternative to diet soda is water. You could have plain sparkling water as well. Consider unsweetened tea, either iced or hot, as another smile friendly alternative.

If you cannot curb your sugar free drinks, drink diet soda with a meal. Additionally, rinse your mouth with water after you eat and drink diet soda.

These simple changes to your lifestyle will contribute to a healthier smile. Please come see us for your regular cleaning and dental checkup. We can assess your total oral hygiene picture and give recommendations for improving your oral health.
