What To Expect from A root Canal Procedure

Posted on 11/22/2021 by Moyer Office
What To Expect from A root Canal ProcedureA root canal procedure is a dental treatment that involves removing decay from the pulp of a tooth. There are many reasons to get this done, such as if you have an abscessed tooth or your tooth has been cracked and infected. It can take one visit for a dentist to perform this procedure, but it might take more than one visit for you to recover fully. This blog post will go into what you can expect during and after the process to know what's coming up!

What is a root canal procedure?

A root canal procedure is a dental treatment that corrects problems with the tissue and bones inside your teeth. Problems can include infections, injuries to the tooth or jawbone, fractures in the roots, cysts (fluid-filled sacs), fractures in the crown of a tooth and abscesses. When left untreated, these conditions can lead to tooth loss from severe pain or an abscess.

What to expect during and after the procedure

Root canal procedures are typically performed after an initial examination to determine whether or not you need one. If the tooth is damaged, we will likely recommend that you have this procedure done as soon as possible. When preparing for your root canal, be sure to tell our office if you've recently had a dental injection because it can alter local anesthesia and affect the success of our procedure.

During your root canal, we'll clean and sterilize the area around your tooth to remove any bacteria or debris that might be present to prevent infection. To further reduce the pain, you may need a local anesthetic as well as sedation (if necessary). Drs will also take X-rays during this time to make sure everything is going smoothly, and there isn't anything unexpected happening under the surface. Once it's completed, we'll fill the space with a special material that prevents future infections from developing inside your mouth where it's located.

Tips on how to take care of your teeth post-root canal treatment

Afterward, we typically recommend taking antibiotics for up to two weeks after the treatment depending on what was done, so you don't have another problem down the road. You can also expect some mild discomfort and sensitivity to the area and a temporary feeling of pressure, but this will go away within a few days after your procedure is done.

Our team of dentists is happy to answer any questions or address concerns you may have. We're committed to providing the best dental care available, so please come by our office to consult if you would like more information about root canal procedures.
