Oral surgeons perform any procedures where surgery on your mouth is involved. To ensure our patients are comfortable at all times, we use Anesthesia to treat our patients while in surgery so to not experience any pain or discomfort.
Most people do not realize that all surgeries including oral procedures require some type of anesthesia. There is a difference in the medications for anesthesia that general dentist use verses oral surgeons.
Local Anesthesia is the most commonly used medication to relieve any pain or discomfort for patients. If is less invasive and the patient will be away throughout the procedure. This type of anesthesia is administered through the gum to numb the area where the procedure is being performed. It is usually administered for quick procedures like fillings.
Patients usually know this type of anesthesia as laughing gas. This type of Anesthesia is a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen. It is administered through a mask that the dentist will put on the patients face and ask them to breath it in. It does prevent discomfort while also causing relaxation within patients, but it also has the side effect of making patients laugh for a short time which is why it is called laughing gas.
General Anesthesia is the most commonly though of by most people. This type of anesthesia is administered through an intravenous catheter, and it is a sedative making the patient sleep throughout the entire procedure. Throughout the procedure the sleep is controlled, and the patient will not feel any pain and will not remember anything. For this type of anesthesia, most procedures are more invasive and longer.
