Alzheimer's Oral Health Connection

Posted on 6/20/2022 by Moyer Office
Alzheimer's Oral Health ConnectionThere are very many bacteria in the mouth. Some are highly linked with gum disease. Our dental professionals have established a link between dental health and Alzheimer's disease. This disease is related to dementia, especially vascular dementia. Dental health is vital for such reasons. Our professionals encourage regular dental checkups.

Gum Diseases

Gum diseases are caused by bacteria in the mouth affecting the gum tissue. The affection, in turn, leads to inflammation of the gum area. Inflammation leads to bleeding gums and even loose teeth. The inflammation thus leads to bacteria and infection entering the blood system. The infected blood may travel to the heart or the brain. This happens to be one of the reasons for the rise of dementia cases. Gum diseases can be painful and uncomfortable. Bleeding gums could lead to loss of blood which is discouraged. Gum diseases lead to bad breath which may impact esteem.

Alzheimer's disease

Patients with Alzheimer's disease may experience worsening oral health as the condition persists. Therefore, it is encouraged that general oral health like brushing teeth should be maintained in the beginning. As the disease intensifies, the patient may forget these routines. Patients experience deterioration in their cognitive senses. The reduced senses may make them forget the practices and is terrible for their oral health. Providing direction to such patients is vital. This may lead to the required prevention. Use of short and direct routines is advised when taking care of them. Family members of old age are most likely to get Alzheimer's and should be under constant supervision.
