 What Is an Implant?
A dental implant is a titanium post which, as the name suggests, we surgically implant into the jawbone. Once in place, the implant serves as the root component of a prosthesis. This is made possible largely thanks to the process of osseointegration. During osseointegration, the implant post, and your jawbone fuse together to create a powerful bond, one that is strong enough to support a restoration against the pressures of your bite. The implant post is usually attached to an abutment, or support structure, which links the post to your restoration.
What Is a Bridge?
A traditional bridge is an appliance used to replace one or more missing teeth. The bridge consists of two dental crowns linked together by a pontic, or false tooth. The two adjacent teeth must be completely reshaped to accommodate each crown. Once the enamel is in the proper shape, we must take an impression of the area. This impression will be used to fabricate your final bridge. Once your final bridge is ready, we will permanently cement it to your teeth.
What Is a Fixed Implant bridge?
We typically recommend a fixed implant bridge when more than one tooth is missing. A fixed implant bridge is similar to a traditional bridge but does not rely on the surrounding teeth. Instead, we place one implant for each missing tooth. If this is not possible due to the insufficient bone in the jaw, we may suspend a pontic between two implant posts. It is also possible to foster new, robust bone growth with a ridge augmentation or bone graft.

Once the implants are in place, there will be a brief healing period. After the healing period, we can attach the abutments, and take an impression of the area.

Once your final restoration is complete, we will permanently attach it to the implant posts.

Implant Bridge Vs. Traditional Bridge
If you are missing more than one tooth, a fixed implant bridge is the way to go. While a traditional bridge can restore the function and esthetics of your smile, it simply does not have the same benefits. One of the biggest benefits of an implant bridge is bone preservation. When you lose your teeth, you lose the physical stimulation that prevents your bone from deteriorating. Each implant supplements this stimulation, keeping your bone healthy and strong.
A traditional bridge can cause complications for your abutment teeth without the proper maintenance. This can lead to a bacterial infection or further tooth decay. A fixed implant bridge does not affect your surrounding teeth. In other words, your fixed implant bridge can be treated just like your natural teeth. You can brush and floss around your new restoration as you would normally. You will also be able to eat your favorite foods with confidence and comfort.
