What is an Implant Bridge?

In order to understand an implant bridge, it helps to first understand how traditional dental bridges are structured. Traditional bridges are made to restore one tooth without any invasive procedures. In this method, the two teeth on opposite sides of the missing tooth are shaved to accommodate the missing middle tooth.

After the shaving, a cap is created that has the missing tooth at the center and the cover for each of the side teeth, forming a bridge. The missing tooth is replaced when the traditional bridge is installed. One downside to this method is that it lasts for a shorter period of time. Dental bridges last on average between five and 15 years. Additionally, the traditional bridge method does not work when there are no side teeth to support the bridge.

This is where an implant bridge is beneficial. An implant bridge is created on dental implants, meaning that the side teeth are implanted in the jaw and then a bridge is created. This way, it is possible to replace multiple missing teeth in a row. Since the whole bridge is built on implants, the structure is expected to last much longer than a traditional bridge.

How do Implant Bridges Work?

The procedure for implant bridges has two surgical steps. If you are missing multiple teeth in a row, the first step involves inserting the implant posts on either end. Following the first procedure, there will be an interval of four to six months to allow the implants to stabilize around the surrounding bone.
Once the process of osseointegration is complete, we begin the second step of the procedure. The placement of the bridge of pontic (replacement) teeth takes place in this step, filling the gap.

Advantages of An Implant Bridge

There are several advantages of a dental implant bridge. The first is that it offers a long-lasting, even permanent, solution that also maintains the structure of surrounding teeth. Additionally, an implant bridge is strong and can effectively handle regular biting and chewing. Another benefit to the implant bridge is that it feels and functions like authentic human teeth. In terms of the cost, an implant bridge is less expensive compared to replacing every missing tooth with a dental implant. This is because it only involves two to three implants, while the rest of the gaps are covered by the bridge.
