 At David R. Moyer, DDS, we want our patients to understand their oral health as much as possible. When you understand what's going on in your mouth, you will be better able to take great care of it. One issue that most patients have to deal with at some point in their life is wisdom teeth. Most people have wisdom teeth, and very few can keep them.
Most people don't have enough room in their jaw for wisdom teeth, so if they are allowed to erupt, they are often impacted, which means they run into other structures in the mouth. Impacted teeth can mean damage to structures in the mouth and infection.
What are Wisdom Teeth?
Wisdom teeth, also known as the third molar, are usually the last set of teeth to erupt, typically in the late teens. Sometimes the mouth has enough room for wisdom teeth, they come in properly aligned, and they are a healthy addition to the mouth. More often than not, wisdom teeth either don't have enough room or are not coming in at the correct alignment, or both. When they are misaligned, they can come in at strange angles that can cause serious damage to the jaw or surrounding teeth, which presents a serious risk for infection.
Do My Wisdom Teeth Need to be Removed?
This is a great question! Wisdom teeth are a great example of a situation where it pays to come in for your bi-annual appointments. When you or your kids come in for regular cleanings and exams, we can stay ahead of serious dental issues like potential wisdom teeth impactions. We make sure to take a series of dental x-rays at least once a year to see what has changed in the mouth and keep track of issues like wisdom teeth. With the help of these images, we can make a treatment plan to remove wisdom teeth before they erupt or become impacted.
How Are Wisdom Teeth Removed?
Because Dr. Moyer is a doctor of dental surgery, all tooth extractions are performed in our office, and we avoid having to refer our patients to other dental practices. We find that this streamlines the process of wisdom teeth extractions quite a bit! We prefer to remove wisdom teeth before they become impacted, which often means that we need to perform a surgical extraction.
Sedation
We begin the surgical extraction procedure the same way we begin every procedure, by making sure that you are comfortable and properly anesthetized. We understand that some people have a fear of having dental work done and want to make sure that you are relaxed and comfortable before we begin. Just ask us about our dental sedation options, and we will be happy to help you choose what's right for you.
Surgery
Once you are anesthetized, we will make an incision in the gum line above the wisdom teeth and remove them with some special dental tools. We will suture the gums closed and pack the site with gauze before sending you home with special post-operation care instructions.
