What Are Dental Veneers?

Dental veneers are an extremely thin, durable, shell-like prosthesis, which are specially designed for the front surfaces of the teeth in order to mask any imperfections in your teeth and create a youthful smile.

Veneers are bonded to the front surfaces of teeth with the help of bonding cement. These help in the aesthetic modification of color, shape, length, and width of teeth. Dental veneers do not provide a complete coverage of the teeth and are conservative in nature.

What Are Dental Veneers Made Of?

Dental veneers can be fabricated with either resin composite materials or porcelain.

What Are the Different Types of Dental Veneers?

Two major types of dental veneers can be provided to you by Dr. Moyer.

Direct veneers are placed directly on the surfaces of teeth with no preparation or minimal preparation. Dental composite resins are the ideal materials used for direct placement. These are used to correct minor defects of front surfaces of teeth. Direct veneers are sometimes known as lumineers.

Indirect veneers are provided in multiple visits and require adequate tooth preparation. Indirect veneers are fabricated mainly from porcelain material. Dental resin composites can also be used for making indirect veneers. An impression of the prepared tooth is sent to the dental laboratory for the construction of indirect veneers. These are indicated in cases of major tooth defects.

When Should I Opt for Porcelain Veneers?

Dr. Moyer may advise you to choose porcelain veneers if you have staining and discoloration of teeth, or other imperfections including:
•  Wear and tear in teeth resulting in chipping, cracking, and unsightly appearance of teeth, necessitating aesthetic treatment
•  Thin translucent outer enamel of teeth wears down with age exposing yellowish underlying dentin
•  Consumption of carbonated beverages, tea, coffee, and smoking cigarettes produces stains and discolorations of teeth
•  Misaligned and uneven front teeth
•  Abnormal spacing or diastema between teeth
•  Irregularly shaped teeth with craters and bulges on surfaces

Why Are Porcelain Veneers Better?

Porcelain veneers have certain advantages over dental resin composite veneers:
•  Porcelain veneers are more resistant to staining
•  Porcelain veneers can reflect light better and are aesthetically more pleasing
•  Porcelain veneers are stronger and more durable
•  Tooth disturbances such as gaps, chips, cracks, and deep stains are covered better with porcelain veneers
•  These can be an alternative to orthodontic treatment in mild misalignment cases

Will My Teeth Become Sensitive with Porcelain Veneers?

In some cases, mild temporary sensitivity can develop soon after placement of porcelain veneers due to the removal of tooth structure during preparation. However, it goes away after some time.

Will My Porcelain Teeth Veneers Last Forever?

Dr. Moyer estimates the lifetime for a porcelain veneer in the range of 5-15 years. It can vary due to your dietary habits and oral hygiene maintenance habits. Composite veneers have a shorter life than their porcelain counterparts.
